Dr Sam Bruce: Director of Philosophy and Education
Sam is Director of Philosophy and Education at the Legatum Institute.
Prior to joining the Legatum Institute, he led research and advocacy projects at the Centre for Social Justice, including in housing, homelessness, planning, criminal justice, youth services, and sports policy. Policy papers he developed garnered support from Secretaries of State, government and opposition Ministers, MPs, Peers, and sports personalities, leading to tangible improvements to policy and legislation.
He is keen to bring theoretical research into conversation with practitioners, and to that end has led collaborations with large national corporations and scores of small, local charities across the UK. He has also supported the delivery of several educational and humanitarian initiatives in East Africa and Central Europe over the last fifteen years.
He read for a BA in Liberal Arts and Sciences at University College Maastricht and the University of California, Berkeley. At the University of Oxford, he completed an MPhil and DPhil in Politics, undertaking research in contemporary and historical political philosophy. He taught students reading for the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) degree at several Oxford colleges and was a visiting scholar at Sciences Po, Paris.
