The Legatum Institute, a leading London-based think tank, is delighted to announce that it has appointed Baroness Philippa Stroud as CEO to lead its mission to promote the ideas and policies that help individuals flourish and nations prosper.

Baroness Philippa Stroud Appointed as CEO of the Legatum Institute

Legatum Institute Chairman, Mr Alan McCormick said

“Philippa has committed her life to social reform at both the local and national level. Her most recent work at the Department of Work and Pensions involved re-architecting social policy in the UK with an emphasis on making government work for the vulnerable. She formerly worked among the homeless in Bedford and Birmingham and among those suffering addiction in Hong Kong, as well as being a co-founder of the Centre for Social Justice in London.”

Mr McCormick added:

“Philippa shares our vision that personal transformation is possible and that through careful research and data, it is possible to understand what drives and constrains the creation of lasting prosperity and wellbeing. Philippa is a perfect fit to lead the Legatum Institute.”

Founded in 2009 as an independent, non-partisan, global think tank, the Legatum Institute Foundation is an educational charity committed to measuring, developing and promoting the ideas and policies which help individuals flourish and nations prosper. It is best known for its annual flagship publication, the Legatum Prosperity Index which measures the prosperity of 142 countries annually. The UK was ranked 15th in 2015.

Philippa Stroud was ennobled in 2015 and became Baroness Stroud of Fulham. Prior to this she served as Special Advisor to the Rt. Hon. Iain Duncan Smith MP (Secretary of State for Work and Pensions) in Government from 2010-2015. More recently, as Chief Executive, she has led the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), which she co-founded in 2004. The CSJ has made a vital contribution to political debate and public life in the UK through its research relating to poverty alleviation and social justice.

Baroness Stroud said:

“I am honoured and excited to be appointed CEO of the Legatum Institute. We share a passion to help each person, family, community and nation reach their full potential. My life’s work in creating pathways to help people out of poverty and restore social justice, together with the Legatum Institute’s extensive research and insights on what creates individual flourishing and national prosperity will be an extremely powerful combination which will deepen the Legatum Institute’s impact and broaden our reach within the UK and internationally. Working with the Board and team we will cement the Legatum Institute’s reputation as a world class center for metrics and empirical research on what drives and restrains flourishing societies.”

Mr McCormick said:

“The Legatum Institute aims to provide leaders and policy makers globally with tools and insights to make effective decisions which lead to a more just and prosperous future for everyone. Our commitment to economic prosperity and social wellbeing is at the heart of the Legatum Institute’s research. With her extensive experience in community transformation, government and policy making, Philippa will materially strengthen Legatum’s capacity to engage at both the grassroots and political levels of society”

Baroness Stroud concluded:

“I have followed the rise and impact of the Legatum Institute in recent years and am truly excited to be working with such an outstanding team. I am also excited to explore opportunities to collaborate with other organisations founded and supported by the Legatum Group such as the London-based Freedom Fund, which focuses on anti-slavery and trafficking issues, and the New York-based END Fund which is a leading global health player addressing neglected tropical diseases. Together we are providing policy and on-the-ground research and solutions that help people move from poverty to prosperity. I can’t wait to get started.”
