The Legatum Institute is delighted to announce the creation of a new Race Equality Commission, co-chaired by Baroness Philippa Stroud, CEO of the Legatum Institute, and Rev. Nims Obunge MBE DL.
Building on the data and analysis available in the Government’s 2017 Race Disparity Audit, the Commission will explore why racial disparity exists in the UK and identify the changes that would make a tangible difference to people’s lives and lead to a lived experience of racial equality. It will work to better understand the experiences and attitudes of all the different races that make up the British population – from the school environment to the labour market, the criminal justice system to the health system – in order to ensure that everybody in the UK can create their own path to prosperity without any obstacle.
The Commission will consist of 13 Commissioners representing a variety of sectors from across the UK. It will meet monthly from December 2020, and will take a broad and collaborative approach, combining both data analysis and examination of the lived experience, taking in evidence from diverse communities across the UK. The Commission will aim to represent all voices, with Commissioners working in partnership to create the pathways to prosperity for all.
Commenting on the launch of the new Commission, CEO of the Legatum Institute Philippa Stroud said: “Since it was founded, the Legatum Institute has firmly believed that every individual has immense personal worth, dignity, and purpose. We stand against racism in all its forms and are committed to working to increase the prosperity of all. We know that creating a better world needs to involve everyone collaborating together to ask deep questions about community, identity and belonging; about the distribution of opportunity, power and responsibility; about reform and how to bring about healing and unity. These are some of the questions that the Race Equality Commission aims to answer.”
Co-chair of the Commission Rev. Nims Obunge MBE DL said: “Race relations across the UK has always been a thorny issue to address in a holistic and positive manner, so I am delighted to co-chair this Commission with Commissioners from diverse backgrounds and experiences. It is my hope that our collaborative efforts and subsequent action plan determined by our consultation with the British public will foster a cultural shift and secure a better and more prosperous future for all races for generations to come.”
