Dr Alastair Masser

Alastair is the Founder of Toht, a social impact consultancy helping address some of today’s most pressing challenges, from the refugee crisis to climate change. He leads the Institute’s work on the Legatum Prosperity Index, our flagship publication which measures evolving trends in global prosperity.

A former Director at the Institute, Alastair spent the first decade of his career in politics including serving for four years as a UK Government Special Adviser. He is co-editor of a new two volume series on diplomacy, published by Bloomsbury in April 2021. His research interests include conflict, security, and development with a particular focus on the Sahel and sub-Saharan Africa. He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Department for War Studies at Kings College London, and teaches at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Joint Services Command Staff College (JSCSC) at Shrivenham.
